Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA)

The Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) is an extra fee added to your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums when your income is above a certain amount.

Your Part B IRMAA is automatically added to your Part B premium. This is deducted from your Social Security check if you're receiving one or paid to Medicare when billed.

Your Part D IRMAA is paid directly to Medicare and is separate from your prescription drug plan premium. This can be deducted from your Social Security check if you're receiving one or paid to Medicare when billed.

You receive a notice that includes information about the IRMAA and your appeal rights if Social Security determines an IRMAA applies to you. Please remember that Medicare treats IRMAA payments the same way it treats other premium payments, meaning you could lose your coverage if you don't make these payments on time each month. IRMAA payments also apply if you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.

The 2024 Medicare Part B and Part D IRMAA amounts are included below. Visit medicare.gov for more information about IRMAA.

Part B IRMAA

The standard Part B premium amount in 2024 is $174.70. Most people pay the standard Part B premium amount. If your modified adjusted gross income as reported on your 2022 IRS tax return is above a certain amount, you pay the standard premium amount and an IRMAA.
